How does Moodally work?

We know it looks simple, but that’s the beauty. You know how sometimes you watch movies or pick songs based on how you're feeling? Scientific research shows that the opposite is true as well. Videos and audio tracks made according to specific scientific principles, can actually put you in a different mood than the one you're in. That means that not just any piece of video or music content will work, they have to be specially designed. The technique is called "Mood Induction" and it's what we used to build all of our content.

Ok, I’m not buying it. How can watching a video change my mood?

Have you ever cried at a movie? Winced when you saw someone get hurt? Yawned when someone else yawned? These are all examples of mechanisms in our brain that cause us to personally experience things we see in the outside world. Mood induction activates those mechanisms to help you get into a specific mood state. It started as a clinical research technique back in 1968 and is a widely used practice to this day. We use multiple forms of mood induction in our every day life; when we listen to sad songs after a break up, when we give others a pep talk before a big meeting, or when we watch something specific because we know it will make us laugh.

What is mood induction?

Our moods are controlled by our thoughts and our attention. 

Thinking about something unpleasant can put us in a bad mood. Our brain pays more attention to things that reflect the mood we're in. So if we’re in a bad mood, we see things more negatively. 

Mood induction works directly on this thought/attention mechanism. It directs our thoughts, and our attention, away from one train of thought and points our thoughts in a different direction. When you shift your thoughts and attention, your mood shifts as well. That way, when you’re in a good mood, you pay more attention to things that are pleasant. Better thoughts, better mood.

What does mood induction do? 

Science has never used it as a treatment because it requires extensive creative, film and production knowledge. Our staff has backgrounds in neuroscience, psychology, creative development and corporate executive life. It’s our unique blend of talents that allows us to bring you this widely used, and highly effective, technique.

Why haven’t I heard of mood induction before? 

Moodally has been designed for anyone who has ever experienced stress in the workplace. The principles it is based on are universal, and are not linked to a specific profession or kind of work. It's useful for people who work in a corporate environment, the service industry, healthcare, or are self-employed. In our initial consumer research, we reached out to people from a broad range of professional backgrounds. So if work has ever caused a mood you didn't want, Moodally is for you.

Where can I find scientific evidence to back what you're saying?

Our content is a collaboration of multiple artists and scientists. It has been developed together with PhD professors at major Universities, practising psychologists, and specialists in Neuroscience. The content was then brought to life with a team of award-winning creative experts with rich backgrounds in film and advertising.

Who designed this content?

There’s a lot of scientific evidence showing how effective mood induction is. It's been shown to decrease stress, improve productivity, increase resilience and deepen emotional intelligence - all recognized important skills for successful managers. Positive mood induction was even seen to be effective in situations of depression and anxiety. In some research, it was even shown to increase levels of serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that’s also helpful in our sleep cycles and our positive moods. 

Positive moods are associated with better problem solving abilities, increased productivity, improved creativity, better life outlook, improved interpersonal relations, better leadership abilities, higher personal resilience, superior emotional intelligence and increased longevity.

What are the benefits?

The goal of Moodally is first and foremost to help you detach from the mood you’re in, in order to be able to move into a more positive mood. The body can’t directly swing from angry to happy, it needs a pit stop first. So if you haven’t 100% achieved your ideal mood on the first try, but you’re not as negative as you were, then it’s already helping. It’s common that it may take 2-3 videos to completely move your mood.

using the techniques in Moodally consistently over time has shown an improvement in positive mood and mindset. One study showed that in just 15 days people were already seeing significant reduction in stress (Quoidbach, Wood & Hansenne, 2009). But mood management is just like the gym - if you skip it for 3 months… you know the drill. Results you could be seeing:

How do I know if it’s working? 

While the content was designed with the workplace in mind, all of our content can be equally effective in your day to day life, as the dynamics of the mind work the same. In the future, we do plan on releasing additions to Moodally that specifically target other areas of our life.

Can I only use this at work?

No. While we use techniques that are common in the field of psychology, Moodally is not a substitute for therapy or medical interventions targeting depression or anxiety. Moodally is a tool to help manage daily stressors & to help prevent more serious mood problems from developing.

Moodally is as safe as watching a movie or listening to your favorite playlist. We use "normal" music, images and words to help you get into the mood you want. Your participation is key, though. The more you want to get into that mood, the more you will.

Is this therapy? Is it safe?

We understand that your privacy is of the utmost concern. We’ve chosen to have only a direct login to avoid any of your data being used by third parties. You will also notice that we only require an email to login and ask for no additional personal information. Even your name can be fake. In short: what happens in Moodally, stays in Moodally.

Why can’t I use a third party sign on?

We are constantly updating our content. To be able to make this immediately available to you, without you having to update the app all the time, we’ve chosen a platform that works like any of your social media apps.
